What Affects Your Shower Remodel Cost

No hidden fees — here's exactly what drives pricing so you can make informed decisions

Shower Size

High Impact

A standard 32×48 shower costs $5,000-$8,000. A large walk-in (48×60+) with bench runs $8,000-$15,000. More tile area and glass = higher cost.

Glass Enclosure Type

High Impact

Framed slider ($300-$600) vs. semi-frameless ($600-$1,500) vs. custom frameless ($1,500-$3,500). Glass is often the single biggest line item after tile.

Tub-to-Shower Conversion

Medium-High Impact

Converting a tub to a walk-in shower requires new drain placement, extended plumbing, and more tile. Budget $2,000-$4,000 extra beyond a standard shower replacement.

Custom Features

Medium Impact

Recessed niche ($200-$400), built-in bench ($300-$600), body sprays ($400-$800 each), rain head ($200-$500). These add comfort but also cost.

Pro Insight

Expert Tip from Our Shower Specialists

The most overlooked detail in shower design is the niche (recessed shelf for shampoo bottles). Place it at elbow height (48-54 inches from the floor), not at head height, so you're not reaching up with wet hands. Size it to fit your tallest bottle with an inch of clearance. And always waterproof the niche interior — it's a penetration through the waterproofing membrane and the #1 source of hidden leaks in showers.

Avoid These Pitfalls

Common Shower Remodeling Mistakes

Using paper-faced drywall in showers

Regular drywall absorbs moisture and grows mold. Shower walls need cement board (Durock, Hardiebacker) or foam board (Kerdi Board, GoBoard). We never use paper-faced products in wet areas.

Wrong shower floor slope

Shower floors need 1/4 inch of slope per foot toward the drain. Too little and water pools. Too much and you feel off-balance. We verify slope with a level at multiple points during pan construction.

Ordering glass before tile is complete

Glass enclosures are measured after all tile is installed, because tile thickness affects the final dimensions. Ordering glass too early almost always results in gaps or misalignment.

FAQ

Shower Remodeling — Frequently Asked Questions

QWhat is a curbless shower and should I consider one?

A curbless shower has no step-in threshold — the floor slopes directly into the drain. It's ideal for accessibility, aging-in-place design, and modern aesthetics. It requires a linear drain and careful floor engineering. We recommend it for master bathrooms and anyone planning to stay in their home long-term.

QHow do you prevent leaks in a new shower?

Three-layer approach: (1) sloped pre-pan under the tile, (2) waterproof membrane on all walls and floor (Schluter-KERDI or equivalent), (3) proper silicone caulk at every corner and transition. We flood-test every shower pan for 24 hours before tiling to verify zero leakage.

QCan you add a rain showerhead to an existing shower?

Yes, but it depends on your ceiling height and water pressure. Rain heads need at least 80 inches of clearance (ideally 84+) and perform best with 2.5 GPM or higher flow rate. We can add a ceiling-mounted rain head by running new supply lines through the wall or ceiling.

QWhat is the best shower floor tile?

Small mosaic tiles (1×1 or 2×2 inch) are best for shower floors because they conform to the slope toward the drain. They also provide more grout lines for better traction. We recommend unpolished porcelain or natural stone mosaics with a high slip-resistance rating.
